The analytical techniques that I use are optical analysis Scanning Electron Microscope/Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), Fluorescence Spectrophotometry, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and TIMS-Phoenix Mass Spectrometry.

Move on and ask, why? What do you do when reasonable ‘control’ is untainable? That is when we should draw in case study. However, this terminology has been heavily abused.
I am social scientist, so in my case I cannot provide one answer. I use many methods for data collection and analyses, depending on the field I need to make research. In one case I combine qualitative and quantitative methods, in others I step further with action research.
My quantitative methods in experimental science starts off with design of experiments, followed by conducting the experiments and then analyzing the variables for statistical significance using ANOVA or non-linear methods. My social science research methodology consists of using publicly available data such as from the census bureau, construct a model of the dependent variable as a function of explanatory variables and analyze for statistical significance using a variety of techniques including ANOVA or regression model depending upon the scale of the variable studied.

Your favorite methods of data collection are survey research? What are the positive and negative aspects of carrying out surveys? Do you conduct surveys, usually with the use of online questionnaires or in a traditional way, personally meeting with the surveyed people?
