Some literature suggests 7T is required, while other papers suggest Glutamate can be accurately estimated with 3T, using correction procedures for metabolites. Further, I am interested in views on the advantages and limitations of each measure- again, there is not a consensus in the literature.
Higher field strength will give you better spectral resolution but you have also measure the Glu/Glx at 3.0 T MRI but you need specially designed pulse sequence for that like MEGA-PRESS

As mentioned a higher field strength will improve the spectral resolution allowing you to better to differentiate the peaks. I guess there isn't consensus because Glu and Gln quantification can be done at 3T if its done carefully (with corrections like you mentioned), albeit not as easily as with 7T. There are also a range of sequences that can be used/modified to optimize the detection at 3T . We've tried quantification of Glu in patients at my center using average point resolved spectroscopy (PRESS) on a 3T Philips Ingenia with OK success.
Experiments with phantoms at 7T have shown that gluCEST sequence quantification is linear with Glu concentration in physiological concentrations to 10 mM (somewhat easier to show in isolation).
