Nowadays, the scam of the false conferences is become frequent. I know a colleague who has paid conference fees but finally the conference wasn't real. How can we know them and what should we do against this serious phenomenon?
Research papers are products of hard work by researchers. A conference is a place we go to share our ideas and finding. If the conference turns out not to be what it claims, it is quite costly: monetary cost and emotion cost. Signs for raising suspicion:
-Multiple conferences in one city in the same week
-Multiple conferences organized by the same organizer

In addition to Paul's comments, I would avoid conferences where you can't present anything that could be published in a later forum. By contrast, often quality conferences will have arrangements to print the finest contributions in the relevant journals.
