Certain journals allow this.  We just make it clear that we cite ourselves, and put the reference appropriately.  We also can use phrases like: "As described in Yeoh, 2013a, these procedures were carried out in the data collection process....."

After all, the plagiarism software will find our own paper on the Web.  Even though it highlights the similar parts, it is ok.  But I do not copy a very large block of several paragraphs.  I will rewrite again and re-phrase most of it.  It's useful to scan it myself using Viper, and be sure that the similarity index is low: 1%, 3% is fine.

It may be allowed to use the same data for different papers, if the focus and conclusions are different.  As a result, portions of the methodology may be the same.  

When this is true, I recommend that you rewrite the methodology section -- use different words to say the same thing, as Miranda says.  Of course, this is only acceptable if the papers have significant differences, such as using different sections of the data, different statistical analysis, and have different findings and discussion.

You may not submit what is essentially the same study to multiple journals at the same time, even if the wording is different.

You will need to make minor changes in the sentences and refer to the methodology section in your previously published paper. The plagiarism check software in the article submission system will be checking for exact same wordings.

Your point is great!  It's absolutely true.  Therefore those who are worried about plagiarism should keep their mind open,  and don't relay on a stupid software to take most commonly "unfair decisions" to accept/not accept very valuable scientific research article based upon such irrelevant criteria &  irrational non-conceptual basises. 

You can refer to the original paper for the methods. The methods used to ..... were similar to those described in .......In brief, the sections were labeled with???

I agree too with Mr Mohsen. Editors should be more understandable and don't only refer to the plagiarism software, especially in my case where a full section describing the methodology must be rewritten.

If the method description has already been published once, I don't see any good reason to re-publish it, except if it has been published in a journal or book that is exceedingly difficult to find in a good university library. Just refer to it. It does not matter if you refer to your own or someone else's paper, the principle is the same.

A simple rule of thumb I follow and recommend my students regarding writing papers is that, "you must have significant scientific contributions in the paper, which would be worth discussing and reasonably contributing in scientific or literary knowledge". No point in publishing some thing that already has been published. If you using same methodology or techniques then simple cite and refer those articles in your paper. And if you must need to increase number of words and pages, the rephrase and still must cite it.
