As we know the band gap as well as luminescence increase with the decrease in particle size. On the other hand, nano-phosphors exhibit better luminescence compared to its bulk ones. What are the desired range of band gap and particle size for LEDs applications?

The phosphor should be neutral in nature. It means that it can neither be a conductor nor semiconductor. The band gap should be kept accordingly.

It is always not necessary that LUMINESCENCE will increase with decrease in particle size. Generally, in nanomaterials there are enough surface states that are sufficient to kill the luminescence. But one have to be very careful in designing the phosphor such that surface states are passivated by ligands/protecting layers. Moreover, band gap of the phosphors must be greater than 3.1 eV. Because, phosphors emit visible light (400-800 nm) and the host should not reabsorb the emitted light. In order to avoid such problem it is always recommended that host absorption must be in lower wavelength as compared to emitted visible light.
