COD and BOD are completing parameters.

COD (chemical oxygen demand) indicates all oxidizable materials but provides no information on their biodegradability.

BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) indicates the amount of biodegradable matter of effluent.

The COD / BOD helps to qualify the biodegradability of effluent:

In most cases, the BOD value is lower than that of the COD. However, there are cases in which the compounds are not totally oxidized by the standard method of COD, and may have BOD values higher than those of COD (some nitrogen compounds such as pyridines and their derivatives)

It is accepted that a wastewater can be treated biologically when BOD ≥ 0.7 COD.
