In a research topic or reporting the results researcher are sometimes confused to report dependent or independent variables first. For example, X (independent) correlates to Y (dependent) or Y correlates to X.
I think it doesn't matter whether Dependent Variable (DV) or Independent Variable (IV) should be mentioned or discussed first in writing a research topic / reporting results. Importantly your explanation should flows logically & is helping the readers to understand your discussion / reporting. E.g. in terms of writing a research article - sometimes I start off with DV first as it might related to research problem / gaps that I can bring up IVs logically / subsequently for further discussion. Sometimes I start with different IVs e.g. representing different approaches to address different issues, then bring in DV later in which there might be lack of research on evaluating how these different IVs are influencing DV. Wishing you all the best.
I agree that it depends on the start of the art in the current research. If you researching an different approach to changing an outcome because previous approaches have not worked, it would be good start with the new approach, the independent variable. Your research on Reiki for pain control is a good example. If you switch and use the same independent variable, like Reiki, but have a different population, your outcome with that population would be of most interest.
