There is extensive research stuff available on Mechanical properties of Bamboo. Now a days Researchers, engineers and architects are interested and taking efforts to develop various building components using bamboo as a main construction material. Several advantages of bamboo make it more applicable in building and construction materials.

The bamboo is light weight, flexible, tough, high tensile, cheap material than the other building materials like steel. Bamboo can be used in various building works. Bamboo structures are flexible, earthquake resistant, light weight and cheap. Bamboo can be used as reinforcement in various structural members.

Hi Klara,

Maybe it is better to figure out what direction you want to pursue your research first. One option could be going the classic route of fracture mechanics, crack propagation, contact mechanics, joint properties...

You can also instead focus on the dynamical properties of bamboo, using bamboo as sound dampers for example.

Another option (a bit further from the bamboo itself), could be designing microstructures with polymers or metals or ceramics inspired by bamboo. So one could use some of the bamboo's properties in a controlled manner.

Apart from a specific subject, read some recent review and roadmap papers in your field. If written well, they should put the whole research in a good perspective so you could easily detect open fronts and excel in one.

In the past, for biomedical sustaining projects for Africa, I have seen Bamboo's used in the structure of both infrastructure and rehabilitation tools. I do believe Arizona State University in SBHSE ( Biomedical Design Center), under the guidance of Dr.V. Pizzioni, invested both in mechanical and chemical properties of this material in biomedical application. I came to a conclusion based on that prototype there are two main aspects one needs to consider for such mechanical design one the properties of bamboo and type of it and the other the requirement of treatment of that material before use due to the direct effects of stress and load distribution (especially for biomechanics use). Dear Klara,

I would suggest to investigate the structural behaviour of laminated bamboo. Laminated bamboo can create more homogeneous structural members. Additionally, I recommend to you to follow what has been done for timber members in the Eurocodes. Obviously, you need to chose what bamboo variety/specie are you going to use, this can make a difference in the behaviour.
