Having studied qualitative, quantitative and mixed-method research designs both in my undergraduate and graduate schools, I am more interested in getting to know relevant research designs for a PhD degree, especially for Social science and Humanities. Can anyone recommend some useful books?

You have already mentioned all the major approaches to social research. In particular, qualitative, quantitative and mixed-method research each offer many design possibilities. So, as others have pointed out, the next step is to pose a research question or questions, and then fit that to a more specific design within one or the other of three broad approaches.

I believe one must establish the problem before deciding on any research approach. The nature of such a problem will determine the research approach and everything that follows.
Karel Prins I have often heard the advice that one should first determine one's research problem, and then let that in turn determine one's research approach. This sounds good in the abstract, but people often have strong preferences for methods that influence the kinds of problems that they choose to pursue. One obvious example is that people with no interest in statistics are highly unlikely to involved with quantitative research. So, my own view is that there should a cycling back and forth between one's choice of research problems and one's choice of research methods.
A researcher should first determine his/her research problem and respondent so that he/she can choose the best design.
