We successfully hybridize two fishes from two different families(Names withheld for now... Our apologies). Upon studying the embryogenesis of the hybrid, we discovered that at advance stage of development, precisely between Morular and Somite stages, the developing hybrid egg yolk were continuous distorting in shape as shown in the attached video. Perhaps this deformation in the yolk is due to the temperature conditions in the medium in which the eggs are. Could you tell me what temperature they are during the recording of the video?
I don't think temperature is the factor of interest here. This is because such deformations were not observed in the pure crosses despite been incubated under similar environmental conditions. However, genetic compatibility of the two could be the main culprit as species were from two different families. Thanks for you responce Daniel Tecles.
Thanks Daniel Tecles and Joaquin Navajas Acedo for your responses. I think the distortion observed in our study is more of "transitional wave movement". This phenomenon has been previously reported in the catfish hybrid between Heterobranchus longifilis and Clarias gariepinus. The interesting thing about our finding in this study is the fact that both fertilized and non-fertilized (but live) eggs engage in this movement between Morular and Somite stages. The phenomenon was earlier wrongly thought to be an indicator to distinguish live and dead egg, however, this research refute that hypothesis.
Yes Joaquin Navajas Acedo... Majority of the hybrid cross produced deformed fries. However, we are yet to initiate a back cross between the the hybrid and the pure cross, hence no idea of what the performance would be. Lastly, the embryonic wave movement seem to be a common characteristics of catfishes of the family Clarridae. More studies is currently been done to establish this as a fundamental phenomenon of other catfish families.
