It is asked from a societal perspective. I know some examples like generic substitution, introducing vaccination through pharmacies decrease national health expenses. I am interested to know more about different strategies that are useful.
Pharmacists can improve adherence of patients towards drug regimen by providing counseling sessions, thereby improving patients QoL, which would inturn reduce disease burden and thereby save health expenses.
In case of antibiotics, appropriate counseling would reduce unwanted use of antibiotics, reduce microbial resistance and thereby % expenditure spend on health would drastically be reduced.
For a long term action, clinical pharmacy may be a good choice to decrease the national healthcare cost, because it will significantly reducing the use of the Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. Furthermore, sharing responsibility between the pharmacists and doctors or other healthcare providers may reflect positively on the national healthcare cost, becaues it will limit the prescription of unnecessary or similar medications and to reduce the medical errors.
Thank you, all these efforts should be measurable. For each country, it is essential to know how much savings will happen with pharmacist interventions. Pharmacists should know their value too translated to numbers that everyone could understand and appreciate.
