I am looking for studies that surveys pharmaceutical drugs on the market (in the US or internationally) and analyze drugs by form (solid, liquid, semi-liquid). I am not necessarily interested for method of administration.
Please check clinicaltrials.gov few examples below. Its not easy answer for your question but some kind of answer give you searching clinicaltrials.gov:
Using key word TABLET in field " Other terms (For example: NCT number, drug name, investigator name) " I found 20212 studies
There are many overlaps, when e.g. both tablet and solution dosage forms are available. In addition, the preference of dosage form heavily depends on the therapeutic field, e.g. steroids can be given both systematically (in many dosage forms) and topically. There are cases when a solid dosage form is more stable or easier to use/handle, but there are opposite examples as well. Therefore, I am a little sceptical about the question itself.
I am not interested in the varying dosage methods of each drug, if the drug has several forms (topcial vs oral), then it would count for both solid and liquid category. I am just trying to get an overall idea of the different forms and how "pronounced" are they in the market.
Mauro Luisetto, any citation would be tremendously appreciated.
Dear Mohamed, maybe, a more pragmatic approach would be to determine the proportion of active substances in the USA belonging to the BCS (Biopharmaceutical Classification System) categories, such as BCS I, II., III. and IV.
This system is a rather good estimate of the proportion of substances according to their water solubility and permeability.
