What is the difference between "color" and "colour" ?
If we use references from these two kinds of spelling, which one must we choose?
Is it possible if in an article there are not consistent in whole part ?
In one part we use "color" and in another part we use "colour" depend on the source?
Dear Hendrick: in this case, and there are too many words with different spelling, but in scientific writing: we used to use one form of spelling and one form of terminology. For example, you mention some times the word gut bacteris6, then in another rextt6you mentioned : gut microbiome, this is another abuse of terms not allowed in scientific writing. Thanks.
If the different spellings come from the titles of the original articles, then you should retain the title as it was published. In the body of the paper, you should choose one specific style, but quotations and references need to preserved as the they actually occurred.
'Color' is American and 'Colour' is English. Normally, follow the language version of the Publisher either in English or American language. After you know this, always make the entire text in one version either American or English language. The most important thing is to 'be consistent' and only use either one or the other in every article. Hope this helps you :)

I agree with David L Morgan that you should keep the original spelling in the titles and direct quotes exactly as they appear in the sources. Simply put, you should write exactly what you see whenever citing or quoting. For more spelling guidelines, you may refer to Section 6.11of the APA Style (2020).
