I work on alloy development, failure mechanisms and thermomechanical processing of metals. I would like to work on metals to benefit the renewable energy sector. So alloys to improve structural issues rather than copper for conduction or PV's etc.
Has anybody got any recommendations about which metals/alloys need more investigation? And/or what the critical lifing factors of the current alloys used?

I am not specialist in this area, but for wind turbine, composite material seems to the best candidate for blade manufacturing due to many reasons among them durability.

In my case, if you want to reduce energy consumption by material development, I recommend to develop on new theory. In the case of old theory, it is difficult to improve material property because senior almost had developed on that theory. We have just developed new theory in tribology. We also have taken some kinds of development based on this theory already. However, I think huge application are left. Is not it think attractive?

I think my question is too general. The development of alloys and processing routes, and the understanding in general, should help all industries.
What comes to my mind are new materials for power generation from waste heat.by the Seebeck effect
