8. Very often, a side way of a desparate project may be very significant. If you are stucking, try to analyze why. Maybe you will find some very significant observations on alternative routes.
9. Finally, attitude is a much stronger determinant of your carrier than the presently success of an experiment or project.
10. If you feel that the intellectual atmosphere of your lab is not positive, leave it early.

Improve their skills on making better questions, but in practice it means they also have to improve skills on answering an open set of questions to learn what to ask next :-)
Sometimes it's life and easy inspiration, but most of the times it's like what Albert Einstein said “If I had an hour to solve a problem I'd spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about solutions.” and “Genius is 1% talent and 99% percent hard work…”.
You need to work a lot in research to find new areas of virgin research possibilities.
