Suppose you are having a plan to learn a foreign language, what kind of teacher do you prefer, native-speaker or nonnative-speaker? Please consider the following requirements for a good L2 teachers and range them in the order from the most important to the least important. As we didn’t list all items demanded by L2 students, welcome any kind of suggestions~

Again, to make our conception more clear: native-speaker teacher refers to the teacher whose mother-tongue is the target language students want to learn.

Target language proficiency, that means the teacher should be a native or at least speak like a native of the target language

Linguistic knowledge, that means the teacher are supposed to be able to explain the grammar items or structures clearly in class teaching, and also be aware of the differences between the students’ target language and mother-tongue

Language sensitivity, a good teacher should be sensitively aware of the difference between the right/wrong pronunciation or expressions and recognize them quickly

Sympathy Maxim, that means the teacher shares or understands the feeling or confusion his/her students are experiencing; what’s more, he/she may have a better understanding of why such mistakes occur (in such cases, nonnative-speaker teacher is preferred)

Teaching strategies, which means the teacher should be capable to choose the best way to teach when his/her students, teaching situations or teaching materials vary

Psychology knowledge, that means teacher is supposed to acquire some basic knowledge about students’ psychology development

Resemblances seeking, that means if the class is equipped with someone who has the same experience or has met the same trouble as students do, students will feel more comfortable and relaxed and are willing to participant in class activities, which facilitates language learning a lot

Cultural knowledge of target language community, that means the teacher should have a rich and deep understanding of the specific culture of the target language.

Able to communicative or give classes in students’ mother-tongue.

Awareness of inter-cultural communication.
