Fear-mongering is a separate and unfortunate topic. FACTS are that while not trivial, the EFFECTS (illness and mortality) of BOTH strains are so-far not only similar, but relatively minor compared to other serious health matters in the world. The new strain is purported to be more transmissible - but that only highlights the relative futility of masks for general use! FACT is that it will be with us forever, as with many other diseases. FACT is that you might "flatten the curve" which may help care facilities, but that just means that the effects last even longer, and ultimately, similar mortality ensues. Vaccines (RNA-derived only, or you might as well just get the disease, like chicken pox) will certainly help to reduce the population exposure, but we have rarely eradicated any particular diseases from the world (and more often are found), so don't expect this one to disappear soon.

Finally, risk assessment and action are personal responsibilities. You may do what you think is necessary to protect yourself (including from me) but don't try to force me to do something for you without compensation.

Mutation is an inherent characteristics of any Virus. So don't take media seriously.

At this time, there is no evidence that the virus is more fatal and causes more severe forms of Covid-19. It should be noted that this variant has been isolated mostly in young people, less than 60 years of age, who are less likely to develop severe forms. Finally, there is the question of the effectiveness of vaccines currently administered in several countries. Will antibodies from vaccination be able to recognize the new variant of the virus? Currently, there are no data to answer this question.

I think that in any conditions, it must be the the mutual action between the government and people. Quick respond to localize any area where appears the infectious victim and strick carantine , intensive treatment them untile the complete recovery. For the remain population, the vacination is also the prevention.

The common cold is also caused by a coronavirus, and the large number of strains of the common cold virus is the main reason why there has never been a universal vaccine against the common cold. The fear with respect to the SARS-COV-2 virus is that a proliferation of different strains might also render the current vaccines ineffective because of diminished cross-reactivity. I Think we should do more studies about this virus and our immune system,as there are many people died after the infection, some people recovered, and we did not know how this occured?!..There is a missing link.

Hello Khan, I think those variants will always be there as the virus adjusts to the different environments in various parts of the world.

This new variant is showing up when people are fatigued by the precautions they have been taking over the past year. It is very worrying if it true that it is more fatal. It is upon an individual person to take all the necessary precautions and not drop the guard against spread or acquisition of the virus and other infections.
