We recently analyzed coated Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) in the German Arthroplasty Registry for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). We could not show any advantage of coating in terms of PJI. Although we saw a very high revision rate with coated TKA for other reasons.
What is your experience with coated TKA? How do you explain higher revision rates with coated TKA?

I don‘t think that previously launched coated implants have reached the point where they show positive antimicrobial effects without deteriorating osseointegration or leading to other problems (eg. silver). However, I still believe that modern technologies like nanotubes can play a key role in the prevention/treatment of PJI
Thank you Kevin. Until these technologies do really work against PJI we have to analyze the high overall revision rate of coated TKA for other reasons beyond PJI.
