Vertical farming cannot meet the increasing global food demand in any foreseeable time. It simply doesn't work for the diversity of crops, calories, not to mention essential nutrients. Moreover, the energy consumption currently required is too high to make it competitive. At best, it can be used to provide fresh herbs some horticultural products to food deserts (i.e. Ward 7 in Washington D.C.) or ease access to them in other places with challenging climate.
Vertical farming is a very new concept in agricultural sector. But, it has got a massive acceptance in many agrarian countries which have relatively narrow farmland cover. Thus, the concept is promoted to enhance the production of year round vegetables in a limited land using different materials in a climbing way.
