As I see it and as a psychologist, I believe that both thinking and reasoning are mental activities. However, any reasoning implies thinking, but reasoning implies more that thinking or, if you want, a chain of thinking. You are thinking, for example, when you are solving an intellectual task, a Piagetian task for instance. When, for example, a child says that there are more flowers than roses, s/he is thinking. When s/he says that there are there are more flowers than roses because carnations are also flowers, but not roses.

In other words, when we say that something or someboby is the case we are thinking. When we give reasons to justify why something or somebody is the case we are reasoning.

Sylogisms are good example of reasoning, namely deductive-hypothetical reasoning is which we draw a conclusion from several previous premises. We also reason in an inductive way, for example, when we formulate a law (e.g., all swans are white) with basis on the several cases we know (e.g., we have seen a multitude of sawns and all of them were white). There is also the abductive reasoning is which reasoning is based on analogies. For example, the nest is to some birds such as houses are to human beings.

I am agree with Orlando that thinking is a mental activities. Thinking is closed to understanding since understanding is a way for people to recall what they have in their mind to fit with the new information they have. Usually people will make a connection among knowledge they have. Reasoning is some kind of activity to communicate their thinking. In other words, thinking happens in people's mind and reasoning is a way to show the world what they thinking.
