There are no restrictions in time when citing papers. You may cite classical articles published much more than 10 years ago, provided they have a relation to your research.
No formal restrictions - as Wolfgang R. Dick mentioned you can certainly cite articles from any period. Some journals, especially those in the medical field, will encourage authors to include a relatively high proportion of recent publications - this ensures that the author has investigated the current "state of the art" in the field. Hope this helps!

I would suggest to take articles from the past five years only unless you are working in a theory where you have to say who made that theory and developed it.From there you need to show the developments or the theory and bring it till 2020 latest papers if any
though there is no such restriction but the time gap actually depends of quality and availability of relevant literature in your area of research. If availability is more your can restrict to 5 years. how ever in case of classic articles , as mentioned by R. Dick time is not the restriction.
ultimately you have see the justification of the article you are using for review.
I answer your question with the question you should ask yourself when researching the topic for an essay. What are the best publications on the subject you are writing about, including theoretical works? If you need to go back to Plato's cave theory, for example, do so. Then see how that theory is contested by other philosophers and critics until you have a strong argument about your hypotheses.Suggestions for referring to recent posts, which is fine, have to do with your knowledge of the topic you are writing about. I hope this helps.
