Many, but not all, state universities and colleges in the Philippines require their undergraduate and graduate students to have a 'title defense,' which is in preparation for their thesis one and thesis two subjects, respectively.

I am curious about the value and discourse surrounding this. Some would say it depends on the discipline the professor belongs to. However, I argue that the title shouldn't be defended on its own when it ought to be changed during the proposal defense. If there truly is some kind of 'defense' just for the title, I want to ask: what's there to defend?
