What is the stability mechanism in Ni(OH)2?

Alpha Ni(OH)2 is not stable in alkaline environment, peope dopes Ni(OH)2 with Cobalt or Aluminum (or other trivalent cations) to synthesise stable alpha-Ni(OH)2. What is the mechanism for chemical stability? How doping improves stability?
