The simplest identification of phenolic compounds is through the ferric chloride test. You take little sample & add the yellow FeCl3 solution to it.If there is phenolic group, then a blue-violet color will be observed (in many cases) but colors such as purple, green, or red-brown were also detected. There is a reaction which forms a complex as the equation shows:
