Teachers have a very important role in promoting Sustainable Living. For students, teachers remain their role models all their life, and what they impart stays with the students for life.
Our teacher is a model of our life & he remain with us under a respectable memory for our life . It is this memory which have generated may also become a guiding force for our planned career & it is the said fragrance root of our teacher which also has become sustainable living .
For the sake of readers, can you please elucidate on respectable memory as regards to knowledge impartation and how it translates into sustainable Living. Your contribution will be well appreciated.
I think the question raised by Adebayo Adeboye on the role of teachers in promoting sustainable living is relevant and vital to every living person on earth or in the world for obvious reasons.
At the same time, the subject of sustainable living is also related to other concepts like education for sustainable development, life skills, quality education and teaching, sustainable development, sustainable environment, food security, social inclusion, sustainable community, peace and security, inclusive politics, human rights, and teacher competencies.
To begin with, the teachers themselves are the starting point because they themselves need to be very conversant with the content of the subject before they can share it with their classes or students. This should apply to all kinds or grades of teachers right from kindergarten early childhood education to university education.
This means the teachers need to first work on themselves to build capacity or relevant competencies regarding sustainable living learning, teaching, practice, research, publications, exhibitions, field work, community services or practices, entrepreneurships, or consultancies.
Their contents need to focus on personal, family, community, state, sub-regional, regional, and international (global) perspectives, in view of the imposing globalization reality.Since globalized is driven or propelled by telecommunications systems involving ICT applications, each practising or informal teacher will do better with access to unfettered internet services.
In this connection, computer literacy or ICT literacy as well as media literacy in addition to functional literacy or adult education are imperative. Teachers who are role models contribute to multiplier effects regarding their promotion of sustainable living issues.
In addition, sustainable living should be infused in all the teaching curriculum because all courses, subjects, or programmes can contribute to sustainable living as much as they contribute to professional career development.
At the moment, the United Nations 2030 sustainable development goals (SDGs) can provide a good framework for teaching sustainable living at all levels using formal, informal, as well as non-formal methods of teaching or education.
They key issues of sustainable development which the teachers need to grasp are classified as: social issues, economic issues, environmental issues, and political or legal issues. This means a teacher should be familiar with the goals, targets and indicators of the 2030 SDGS.
The performance (effectiveness and efficiency for productivity) of a teacher is heavily affected by the terms and conditions of service, human resource management policy, institutional facilities, the status of students or children (socio - economic conditions), ethics, and effective implementation of the right institutional policies.
This means that teachers can do a lot to move mountains regarding the promotion of sustaining living teaching in any part of the world. There is no country country or teacher in the world who is exempted from this key question.
The role of teachers in promoting sustainable living is of paramount importance. However, your question leads to the new question: Are teachers prepared to teach their students about sustainability? Are there study programs that enhance teachers' preparation in sustainability? A great reference book about this theme is David Orr's Ecological Literacy. Here in attachment are a couple of articles that also could be of interest to you.
With regards to the preparedness of teacher to teach students about sustainability, I think much still needs to be done particularly in the least developed/develooing countries. There is a need to build capability through study programs that can facilitate teachers' preparation in sustainability. Sustainable living should also be incorporated into the teaching curriculum at all levels of education.
Absolutely Adebayo! Sustainability education is becoming (finally) to emerge however, the steps forward are very little. My experience is that most universities are still anchored to an education that is compartmentalized. Sustainability education instead is multidisciplinary and thus has many challenges to find a "niche". This is not a problem that (as you wrote) affects African universities only. Best of luck with your research.
So much about sustainability is invisible. Teachers of all subjects need to make their (the teacher's, the classroom's, the school's, the community's) relationship to the world visible. Dr. Madhu Prakash, at Penn State, started class one day by placing the garbage bin on a table in the center of the room. When we all looked at her, puzzled, she asked why it was usually kept in the corner. This was the beginning of this inquiry for me and for many others in her courses. Creating this visibility doesn't have to dominate the educational experience in your class (although that would be reasonable too) but can be an ongoing practice of remembering to combat the active work to ignore/forget that is so pervasive.
I think that tailored answers can be provided when you indicate your concept and scope for sustainable living. Otherwise, you will be getting generic responses which might be of little help
The simple fact that children are impressionable and naturally look up to their teachers puts teachers in a unique position to inculcate, and model, lifestyle choices that promote sustainable living. For example, once we get it into our children's heads that littering is bad and recycling is good, they are likely to keep the habit for life. Not only that, but they will also start policing their parents and their peers:). I've seen the power of these young environmental advocates and enforcers on my visits to China.
Thank you for the significant contribution. I absolutely agree with you. Children tend to believe their teachers more than any other person.
From you visit to China, what can you say about the impact the teachers over there are making as regards advocating for sustainable living when compared to the U.S., where you presently work.
Thank you for your continued support. I have downloaded the article and gone through the abstract. I think it's really going to be an interesting one that deserves my time. I look forth to share and discuss my findings tomorrow.
Teacher must learn their student about ground reality of life with some practical moral values and impress their student about the role of parents and family which will be very helpful for the students in sustainable living.
Teacher plays a significant role in students' life. Students are equipped with various skills and knowledge at various stages to lead a happy and successful life. Thus the concept of sustainable living can be well transmitted to all students (future citizen) by a teacher. Teacher should be aware of right curriculum , pedagogy and discipline to infuse the concept of sustainability in students' life.
I think any teacher has to be aware of the impact that they have about anything with their students, whether related to their subject or not. Therefore I feel that teachers have a role in all areas of life including the subject of this question.
teachers must also be an expert in their field thus making them more credible source of information, because usually students tend to look up to them and believes what they say.
