Social security is an important source of risk coping mechanism in absence of insurance and formal loans. Some of the social security is assistance from relatives and friends in the form of informal loan, gifts, remittance, etc.

I might suggest some older and newer writings that may help you from my shelf, all of these take on the issues of risk, some address social protection and labour issues directly, others are addressed to wider technological and industrial transformation.

The first explicitly takes on your question considers different forms of risk in terms of informal work and gender concerns, and provides a framework to assess type of risk and type of work, thus type of assistance. It also helps consider a range of actors and organizations providing risk-mitigation strategies.
The second is an evaluation document in a program that you probably know well SEWA.
The third and fourth are conceptual frameworks specifically dealing with divergent labour markets and technological change. They use the idea of a 'regional risk ecology' to show why some workers and not others get coverage, and can benefit from a sector's expansion. Both have Indian examples, but the Theory and Society article argues for why we should be careful about comparing India with European systems, and also helps differentiate between different types of European systems. Specifically, the paper differentiates three strands of social protection measures that have left to different policy and planning responses: place (residence-based), work-place, and work (labour) entitlements.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will definitely look into this. In particular, I am more interested in Risk coping mechanism in the wake of natural disasters which has a severe negative impact in household income and expenditure. In this case, some of the families and relatives transfer financial resources (both cash and kind in terms of remittance and gifts) to buffer consumption.
