What is the role of Ni in reducing band gap of a KNbO3 based piezoelectric material?

Piezoelectric material which I'm using is KNbO3 based...I'm doping Ni in place of Nb. I want to know on how Nickel will aid in reducing band gap..

Ni atoms substituted for niobium most probably will be low spin trivalent. Than their eg orbitals or a narrow band if doping is considerable may appear within the gap, and having electrons in this band may produce electron conductivity. You must calculate both undoped KNbO3 and doped with at least 50% of nickel as we did lately.
