Leptin is often referred to as an “obesity hormone, a fat hormone or a starvation hormone.” This hormone is predominantly synthesized and secreted by our adipose tissues specifically the white adipose tissue, then it acts on the hypothalamus located in our brain and other peripheral tissues. This hormone signals our body to stop eating for we are already satiated. Elevated adipose leptin and plasma leptin levels are seen in obese patients wherein their body fails to reduce excess adiposity – which indicates a state of leptin resistance.
