Recent article in The New York Times and meta-analysis by J. Hattie and H. W. Marsh in Review of Educational Research say that there is absolutely no relation between quality of teaching and research and suggest that biggest problem in universities is that "We ask researchers to teach, and teachers to do research, even though these two capabilities have surprisingly little to do with each other". What is your stand (or research findings)? Is work ethics relevant for this relation? Do people with high work ethics manage both roles? Are there effects of the level of teaching: undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate... Is it easy to be a good scientist and a good mentor of a PhD student while on lower levels those roles conflict? What are the effects of massive higher education?
