This will depend to a great extent on food habits of the cultured species. Planktevores (phyto- or zoo-) and omnivores can make wider advantage than carnivores. However, intensive culture, in comparison with extensive and semi-intensive culture practices, don't rely greatly on the natural productivity of rearing systems but rather it focuses on the quality of artificial or supplementary feeds to fulfill the nutritional requirements of the cultured species and acheive the profitable grwoth.
