Mange outbreaks are typically allowed to run their course. When dealing with a species at risk, it is best to capture and treat animals against the mites burrowed in the skin of the animals - a veterinarian should be involved to threat infections and other illnesses resulting from the infestation. Under very cold temperatures, sarcoptic mange can lead to hypothermia and death. In Switzerland we are noting extreme cases of mange in foxes, as is probably in other European areas as well. To my knowledge there is no active management against sarcoptic mange in wildlife in Switzerland as well. In 2018 we observed a transmission of sarcoptic mange from a severely infested fox seeking shelter (in a outdoor pig hut) on an animal refuge to farm animals and humans. We were treating the animals with avermectins and topical neem oil products. Did you have had diagnosed scabies and mange in your dog ?

Here at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at the Wisconsin Humane Society in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, we have successfully treated dozens of wild foxes and coyotes suffering from mange. In our wildlife hospital, we use a series of either injections or oral doses of ivermectin given to the affected animal to kill the mange mites. However, for legal, safety, and ethical reasons, this treatment should be administered by a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. (In the U.S., licensed wildlife rehabilitators work with licensed veterinarians to administer care to injured, sick, and orphaned wild animals.) And as Mr. Proulx alludes in his answer above, there are often secondary issues such as emaciation and bacterial skin infections that must also be properly addressed if the animal is to survive long-term.

Curious as to you research area. We are starting to see this in Washington state here in the U.S. Like the one in the photo that showed up in my backyard New Years day.

John M. Regan. I am on the Querecho Plains in SE New Mexico. Unfortunately, the regional trapper has taken over the case and will remove both the affected individuals and the healthy individuals. It is a darn shame, but the coyote population is really at a peak this year, and I even noted that in one home area of a pack of 9 adult coyotes, there were no surviving desert mule deer fawns this year.

It is my personal suspicion that the cattle are carriers of mange, but rights of stock on landowner leases in BLM outweighs the wildlife every time.

Hunters around Roswell have reported that 2 out of 5 coyotes harvested have mange that renders their pelts worthless, and another person shared this picture of a mangy coyote near Albuquerque.

I was unaware of the magnitude of this problem in Lea County, New Mexico. This is the first time I have encountered such animals in my monitoring of wildlife waters, but I'm sure it won't be my last.

In all my 40+ years of wildlife study, there has never been a satisfactory solution to the coyote vs. ranching conflict.

Thank you, Arvind. The coyotes were on public land. Apparently, the worst affected animals died in the height of the cold, because they were not seen again, before the trapping began.

The trapping was very successful and only healthy individuals were seen afterward.
