Healthy human diet must have protein. The recommended human protein requirement is 0.8-0.9 g kg-1 body weight day-1. I am interested to know how much of this protein should come from crops and how much from animals sources?
The body doesn't care what the source of protein is. One can meet protein requirements as a vegan or as a strict carnivore.
Some points to keep in mind:
+ How well the body is able to use protein is in part a function of mineral and vitamin status. Meat generally has much higher bioavailability (absorption) and functional availability (used form vs precursor) of vitamins and minerals. With that in mind, animal protein can be more efficient per gram of macro consumption.
+ Bioavailability often depends significantly on the degree fat solubility of vitamins or even that of different peptides or mineral complexes. (Ex: Article Avocado Consumption Enhances Human Postprandial Provitamin A...
) . Fat in the digestive system will not interfere with the absorption of hydrophilic compounds. Lack of fat in the digestive system can, on the other hand, greatly hinder the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients. In many cultures, meat is more generally associated with dietary fat, but it doesn't have to be (ex: avacado).
+ Healthy organisms not constantly exposed to insulin-spiking nutrients will naturally obtain the majority of their protein needs internally, via autophagy (ex: Article Ubiquitin-mediated regulation of autophagy
). Individuals on a western diet have more chronically hyperstimulated mTOR, resulting in autophagy inhibition. In this case, new proteins might be built almost entirely from dietary protein while misfolded proteins or dysfunctional organelles accumulate, unrecycled. Plant based diets might or might not include high processed carbs likely to deactivate autophagic protein recycling. A strict carnivore or ketogenic diet might avoid this. A typical diet with processed carbs and meat might lead, particularly in diabetic or pre-diabetic individuals, to both the processed carbs and also the meat to spike insulin.
My major is not relevant to human nutrition. That is why my question might be very basic. I appreciate your valuable input and providing such detailed information. I will go through the attachments. I want to calculate future food demand. In that case I wanted to use specific protein consumption factors from animal and crops sources. This is not feasible.
The DRI (Dietary Reference Intake) is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, or 0.36 grams per pound. This amounts to: 56 grams per day for the average sedentary man. 46 grams per day for the average sedentary woman.
Normal daily requirement of protein for one person is 56 or 57 grams. Around 40 to 50% must come from animal sources 1.e. 23 to 28 grams and remaining from plant source. To calculate future demand of a particular period or year. Estimate the expected population on that period or year and multiply it to number of grams of protein required daily per person.
