Butadiene is extracted from mix C4's using NMP as solvent in Extractive Distillation Process.

in this process Lean solvent ( NMP free from Butadiene) is fed to the extractive distillation column.

this stream passes through several exchangers giving out its heat and finally cooled using cooling water or air.

since efficiency of these (air or water) to cool lean solvent is dependent up on atmospheric conditions like atmospheric temperature, humidity etc., the lean solvent temperature to extractive distillation column varies. in some units it varies by 10-15 degrees.

in some industrial units, changes in BD recovery and BD loss to raffinate are observed.

since recovery loss and BD presence in raffinate can also be due to several other reasons, the requirement is to make a quantitative estimation of BD recovery loss solely on account of Lean solvent temperature.
