In my experiment, nickel foam is used to support my developed catalyst for water splitting in alkaline electrolyte. Even though this is a common strategy, the reviewers still suspect that Ni foam has activity towards water splitting, and will be activated during operation. Carbon papers/cloth are recommended. Are there any literatures to investigate the problem of Nickel foam as catalyst support for overall water splitting? or more detailed description of reason for this problem to be provided, thanks.
First, be specific, are you talking about water oxidation or water reduction?
Second, just do a control experiment. Check the activity of your Nickel foam under your conditions. I agree with reviewer that nickel might be catalytically active

@Yurii V Geletii, Thanks for the reply. It is used for overall water splitting. I loaded my catalyst on Ni foams as both anode and cathode for overall water splitting. I did the control experiment with bare Ni foam, but I want to know more details about the activation or activity of bare Ni foam. So I wonder whether they are some published papers investigating this

Could you, please, give us some information about your experiments ( type of reactor geometry, temperature, electrolyte used )? Ni is not stable in presence of oxygen, it should catalyze the hydrogen oxidation beeing a well known hydrogenation catalyst

There are already some reports about the possible electrochemical oxidation/activation of Nickel under alkaline conditions and formation of Nickel oxide or hydroxide and very recently, PingWu Du group has reported Nickel oxide thin films can acts as efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water slitting. So i think you need to consider the reviewer points.

In the open literature for water splitting electrodes you can find potential problems for the nickel foam catalyst supports.

In our lab experiments we use Ni-foam for loading the catalyst, but the problem with the Ni-foam emanates from the genetic make-up of the Ni foam itself. Ni-foam as the name suggests has a porous structure, but its porous nature allows the uncontrolled diffusion of the solvent used in ink preparations. Secondly, one certainly can not ascertain on the area involved in the catalysis. Often, due to porosity the standard area that is 1cm x 1cm is not confined. In these case masking of unwanted area is important.
