Good issue to be dealt on. It would be an important issue to contribute to knowledge to climate science besides assisting the world poor in longer terms.

The issue would attract a lot of overarching themes of the sustainable agriculture. I would see this problem as SA act as a mitigation tool for impact of agriculture on environment. Specially how to reduce the emissions from various activities and cultivation protocol of SA. Inclusion of social and economic aspect for analysisng SA role for CC adaptation would further strengthen the contribution of SA. Please pinpoint your focus.

Sustainable agriculture has not been able to achieve optimal level because its goal of meeting society's food security need has not been met. The quality of lives in rural ares have not improved so also is the environment. There is still a high burden of identifying and applying improved technology in rural communities of sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, is the non-incorporation of ecological and socio-economic considerations concerns in political decisions of governments especially in developing countries. Farming activities is the dominant sector in the developing countries and is engulfed in obvious environmental challenges.

The shift to sustainable agriculture is moving towards Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) that have been undergoing research overtime.

Sustainable agriculture is often restricted to conventional/traditional farming and creates confusion. In fact, it helps to improve soil health by integrating all possible measures so that crop productivity is maintained for a longer time. According to United Nations Development Programme, sustainable development means national food security, upgrade living standard of farmers and conservation of the natural resources, but if we cannot do or give these simple things to our people then, agriculture is not sustainable. Therefore, various traditional and modern methods of cultivation are included in sustainable agriculture. The trends in sustainable agriculture in developing countries are negatives in a sense that we are not meeting the food security of the people due to wars, lack of simple facilities farmers should use and have, lack of market for the produce, lack of finance and information about markets and others and scenarios are also negative, no improvement in life of the poor farmers in developing countries in Africa, over use of land, market imperfection, and lack of capital and industrialization.

Ehagi has posted very interesting response . what role you anticipate with regard to genetically modified crops and off course genetically modified organisms. We can think off taking into the system GMOs but sustainability of GM crops still has many doubts amongst practitioners as well as planners...

You raised a very interesting question. Based on my understanding now SA is mainly focus on improving crop diversity, minimum tillage and water conservation practices.
