A distinguishing characteristic of the Ericsson cycle compared to those you listed is that the heat addition does not occur inside the engine but rather from the outside, that is, it is a cycle for an external combustion engine. In this regard, it is more similar to a steam engine, a Stirling engine, or a Carnot cycle. It is, in fact, a real cycle that resembles in most regards the ideal Carnot cycle, but with realistic heat transfer.

It has been used, though rarely, in some applications (powering ships, etc.). It generally involves more valves and similar components than the Stirling cycle with which it generally is compared. Since it presupposes isothermal expansion and compression, it is very difficult to implement in a system in which these processes occur rapidly. It is much more suited to relatively low rpm applications or other applications in which the heat transfer needed during compression and expansion can be realistically realized.

Ericsson cycle consists of four processes on a pressure- volume diagram, (1-2), rejection of heat constant pressure, (2-3), isothermal compression, (3-4), addition of heat at constant pressure and (4-1), isothermal expansion.

Ericsson cycle is rarely seen. This is a gas power cycle. Ericsson cycle has limited application like Stirling cycle, Lenoir cycle and Atkinson cycle. The application of this cycle may be specific.

Ericsson cycle as said to be taken as gas power cycle. This is also an ideal and closed cycle consisting of heat addition and rejection at constant pressure and expansion and compression considered isothermal.

It is known that Ericsson cycle is an ideal, reversible, closed gas power cycle. In ideal case, the air standard efficiency of this cycle goes to 100%. But practically, the efficiency is less than 100%.

As Ericsson cycle is an ideal closed cycle consisting of two isothermal and two constant pressure processess, this finds limited or rare application.

Ercisson cycle is a ideal gas power cycle, the efficiency is 100%. Practically the isothermal process considered for compression and expansion is not feasible, since the engine in these process has to be operated very slowly.

Ericsson cycle as known to be ideal and closed cycle. Its application is in hot air engines and running a ship. Its ideal efficiency is same as Carnot cycle. In evaluating air standard efficiency for this cycle, volume ratio is taken.

This cycle has a limitation that it is difficult to transfer heat to gas at high rates since the gas film has a very low thermal conductivity. Hence there is no much progress on this hot air engines operated on this cycle.

As Ericsson cycle efficiency is same as Carnot cycle efficiency, Ericsson cycle is used in operation of hot air engines. Now a days, this is not used because gas is having lower thermal conductivity. As and when, petrol and Diesel fuels gets reduced, hot air engines again will come under lime light.

Ericsson cycle consisting of two constant pressure and two isothermal process is a closed cycle. This cycle in the olden days was used for hot air engines.

As Ercisson cycle is a theoretical ideal cycle, the application is limited. This cycle efficiency is same as Carnot cycle. As and when petrol and Diesel engines come to an end, this cycle be considered for use.

Ericsson cycle like other gas power cycles is an ideal closed cycle. The air standard efficiency of this cycle is same as Carnot cycle. Since thermal conductivity of gas is low, this gives impact on its practical use.
