I see some small turbines in Rotterdam and other tities. Is it a kind of way to generate electricity in urban area, while so many documents doubt this direction. How do you think so?
Harvesting wind energy in urban areas is a good direction. Since urban centers consume more electricity the turbines are a great idea. However the size of the turbines are limited in urban environments where the turbines are normally intergrated into existing structures. Since the turbines are smaller, more turbines will be required to produce significant power. The design of the turbines changes slightly as the wind velocity and turbulence become affected by several buildings. Also consideration needs to go on how the turbines will affect the built environment. Urban installations of wind turbines will likely encourage use of the turbines elsewhere. It is a great idea. In any case any energy harvested from wind is free energy.
In my opinion the most efficient wind energy is from large wind turbines in locations with a large wind resource. To avoid transport losses, they should be located close to power lines and oil stations to recharge batteries allowing third generation electric cars. Within the city'm more in favor of integrating large-scale photovoltaic (BIPV) supplemented with smaller-scale wind turbines on roofs or facades of high-rise buildings.
Contrary to common sense, I think wind turbines in urban areas can become a immense loss of resources with no real results.
You must not forget that in urban areas the macro roughness are dominant, creating a profile of the boundary layer completely different that the boundary layer in rural areas or offshore.
It would be better to use the financial resourcess in other facilities better suited to urban environments, such as sewage treatment anaerobic producing methane gas, or even employing financial resources in the most appropriate areas.
The use of wind turbines in urban areas is a further gadged than an environmental solution.
