Usually, the multi layer solar cells have greater energy efficiency than the single junction solar cell. Because multi-junction solar cells are capable of absorbing higher range of wavelength. However with the latest researches in amorphous and polycrystalline solar cell, it efficiency reaches up to 15 - 20%. The efficiency of these cells is the highest available reaching 25%, but the whole process of growing the crystal, added to the slicing loss, makes these cells very expensive.
Moreover, in theory, the efficiency of such cell can reach 60%. Although, efficiency of around 29.3% was obtained by Boeing Spectrolab Inc in 2006, but it is triple-junction solar cell. However, in research an InGaP/GaAs tandem cell with 27.3% efficiency has been achieved.
above all, the energy from solar cells are highly intermittent and depends on many environmental constraints. In one of my paper, "Numerical Simulation Model of Multijunction Solar Cell", I have highlighted the effect of irradiation over the characteristics of tandem cells.
