I have deposited bismuth ferrite on SRO/STO substrate. I have platinum top electrode(diameter 350 micro meters, thickness 60 nano meters). The BFO film is approximately 350 nano meters thick. SRO is about 50 nano meters. I am not getting hysterersis loop. I am using Precision II ferroelectric tester from Radiant Tech.
The optimum thickness is related to many other properties and characteristics of the synthesized material, such as crystalline structure, dielectric constant, structural purity, ... Therefore, you could not determine an optimum thickness regardless the preparation conditions and parameters. Best regards

Which does not depend on thickness but it depends on Nature of material, dielectric possibility, susceptibility and permeability of the media
Try to measure, if possible, the impedance[1,2] of your sample, since it is a more sensitive tool for (sometimes macroscopically hidden[3]) ferroelectric properties.

3. hidden inside, only, well isolated ferroelectric grains, a case correlated with (more) thick films. However, the impedance Z, at high(er) frequencies f, might overcome the (inter-grains') non ferroelectric phase, that is a possible issue in your case.

The ferroelectric properties of the materials generally depends on the bulk ceramic thickness. Whereas in the thin films its doesn't matter. I think you need to pole the film once before PE loop measurements.
Some times, the thin film properties depends on the substrate also.
You can try on standard sample once then go for your thin films.
How about the sample holder diameter. Is it big/small with respect to the Pt electrode.
You should check the input voltage and frequency.
