I'm planning on using BHI or LB agar and replacing deionised water with saltwater that will be collected at the same location where my seawater samples will also be collected for growth promotion tests. This is for an undergraduate project where I have no access to M9 or VPB media. My other option was to use Davis minimal agar for slow growing microbes.
Which would you recommend?

Depends on what you are looking for and what you have access to. Marine agar/broth are distributed as pre-mixed powder by several companies. e.g.: https://legacy.bd.com/europe/regulatory/Assets/IFU/Difco_BBL/212185.pdf
It is basically salts to make artificial seawater plus peptone (5g/L), yeast extract (1g/L) and a bit of iron (0.1g/L as ferric citrate).
Another easy marine medium is Anderson’s Marine Medium: 2.5g/L peptone, 2.5g/L yeast extract, 0.1g/L FePO4 and 750mL sterile aged seawater. pH 7.4. Note that you need to autoclave everything except the seawater in 250 mL dI water and mix with the seawater when cold. Otherwise the medium will be turbid. It'll different with agar though.
