Hundrends of millions have been invested in this feat, after some initial promise such as the Ashtekar's reformulation of GR, the Wheeler DeWitt equation etc (i. E. 100m to a research Group baseb on Imperial college, UK in early '00s).Reseasrch however cumilated to weird theories such as Loop Quantum theory that lost traction by the early'2020s.
Now research is based on 3 premises
GR focused
** diffeomorphism invariance (aborting the meaning of some SR results)
** shape dynamics
QM focused
** restoring locality if the wavefunction update if seen as physical process

The common factor with all physics theories, not just GR & QM, is that they are all mathematically derived from an assumption that the dimensions of Mass and especially Time are independent, fundamental and linear. As science makes more distant or more tiny measurements we have started to make observations which are ever more complicated to explain from a basis of Mass, Length cubed & Time (ML3T).
The certainty with which science proclaims that there is a singularity at the centre of a black hole because the mathematics of ML3T says so is perplexing to me. As an engineer, an answer of infinity means I have made a mistake. If science's dimensional framework is not correct then all of the mathematically derived conclusions for GR & QM become totally moot. Why should we expect that our scientific forebears would just happen to stumble on the exact true nature of the dimensions of physics?
With no real expectation that I could come up with a credible new dimensional model, I started playing with the idea of a different theoretical dimensional framework based on the concept of spherical dimensions. The results remain astonishing to me as to how simple and elegant a dimensional framework can be to provide the basis for a very different understanding of the universe.
This dimensional Framework is described (probably very badly) in my paper A Universal Physics Model based on Spherical dimensions.
How does this solve the GR & QM disparity though? With a spherical temporal dimension.
Firstly I propose that a spherical dimension has 3 dimensional components. 1) the radial dimension or distance from the spherical origin. 2) the equatorial dimension or distance around the spherical surface. 3) the polar dimension or distance, orthogonal to the equatorial dimension around the spherical surface. This arrangement provides a mechanism to move (increase/decrease magnitude) in each of the spherical dimensions without affecting the magnitude in the other 2 dimensions. But that movement will affect direction.
My proposed temporal dimension is a spherical one of trate (the rate of time) equivalent to frequency. But now there is a direction to our rate of travel through time. Adding direction to time gives a totally new mechanism to explain red shift without requiring velocity. A distant galaxy could now be totally stationary relative to us with just a divergent direction of time.
But our time is just based on our radial dimension of trate. We still have an equatorial dimension and a polar dimension. Those are the trate dimensions for space and potential. This provides the mechanism for velocity time dilation and gravitational time dilation without the need to stretch or contract a single time dimension.
Not just that, it provides a completely new pair of temporal dimensions in which electric and magnetic waves can travel without moving in our recognised temporal dimension. Quantum entanglement makes information appear to travel instantly only because that "information" travels around the circumference of a sphere in its own direction of time.
I realise that my ideas are a colossal leap from current scientific viewpoint. If I have piqued your curiosity then all I ask is that you temporarily forget all you know about physics when you first read my paper and approach it as if I am describing physics to you in your first ever physics lesson. When you understand my concepts of spherical dimensions and the idea of a universal fabric from which we can form everything in the Universe, then please ask yourself if spherical directions of trate could better explain things than the existing ML3T based physics. 18 months after publication, although few have read the paper, nobody has given me any arguments to disprove the theory nor reasons as to why ML3T is known to be the real dimensional model.
