in the event that I am interested in introducing a mixed microbial inocula into the GUT of a test animal to study the pattern of colonization of the GUT and probiotic potential of GUT microbiota.
There can be two ways : one by mixing the organisms with diet, but maintaining aseptic conditions as well as assurance of the organism being ingested will be low.Feeding directly with a known quantity( preferably in terms of CFU) will be the better one.
The main problem is identification of the organisms introduced. The inoculum need to have a specific genetic marker preferably more than one. A chromosomal marker to follow the growth of organism in situ is essential. A marker on a damaged phage or plasmid has been tried to follow the clearance of the original inoculum.
