I want to map the sunshine/sunlight distribution in East Africa to assess the energy potential for various regions in the area. What are the techniques I should leverage in this?
You can try the tool PVGIS (http://re.jrc.ec.europa.eu/pvgis/apps4/pvest.php?map=africa), which gives some useful information about solar radiation for the site you are looking for. You can find daily radiation and monthly radiation, together with some information related to the sizing and design of a photovoltaic system.

Hello Noussan Michel,Thank you so much for this idea.I have looked at the tool and its indeed a great tool. However,I cant see a link to have the data. Can the data be downloaded? It would be of great help to me
In addition to the web application provided by Noussan Michel, you may download RETScreen software (it's a freeware) and access the database for solar irradiation of several towns in East Africa. HOMER energy should also be a useful tool but i'll go for RETScreen because you can use it for techno-economic feasibility studies
The good thing is that you can have detailed data for the town you are looking for. However, there is not automatic donwload of the data. You can have monthly radiations and daily radiation for a given month. You should select the output you prefer (I usually use web page and copy paste to Excel). If you need multiple cities with a great level of detail, maybe RETScreen would be better. It depends on your need.
IRENA (www.irena.org) has a global GIS atlas, which combines datasets of multiple countries and organisations: http://globalatlas.irena.org/ . Among others, it includes the NASA SSE dataset, which I have used in the past; this is also the dataset used by both HOMER (free version: v2.68) and RETScreen, which can be applicable for your needs.
