What is the mechanism behind pH rise precipitation and anti solvent precipitation in NHS/EDC modified and folate grafted polymer?

In the literature review, I have found the two strategies to recover folate grafted polymer (PHB or PLGA) in presence of NHS and EDC. 1st rise pH to precipitate out the polymer or secondly add anti solvent like Ethanol to the DMF. What is the chemistry behind these two strategies and which is the better one?
