I suggest you should place the sphere steel on a fixture that hold the steel stable, without free moving. Next, a drop weight should be applied to give a impact on the top surface of the sphere steel. The drop weight could designed to match the shape of the sphere steel, and a brake system could be activated when detecting the rebound of the drop-weight.

I suggest you contact the testing machine manufacturer like Instron, Zwick in your country. The commercial instrumented drop weight tester could be adjusted into a releasing height with given energy (100-450-750J) and impact velocity (3m/s-5m/s, or more higher). The impact force vs, time could then be recorded, which indicating the enduring performance of studied steel against the loading.
