I'm using GPS coordinates for a particular species and need to enter this data into a database. Unfortunately, some of the researchers collecting the data did not record the GPS error. I am wondering if it makes sense to estimate error in those cases for entry into a database or if I should leave the GPS error field blank? Are there any publications or sources touching on this issue that anyone knows about?
The error depends on the type of GPS and the observational period... So, your GPS is single or dual-frequency ? You can browse this publication ( http://www.asprs.org/a/publications/pers/2001journal/september/2001_sep_1021-1026.pdf especially Table 2 ) and you will find the accuracy of GPSs ( Both Signle and dual-frequency ). If it does not enough for you, please explain your problem in more details.

What do you mean for maximum estimated error? If you are looking for the accuracy achievable using GPS, it is related to different factors such as system geometry observable used receiver used environments ecc. In open sky condition using only code measurement the nominal accuracy of a common GPS receiver is 10 meters (Kaplan 2006). If you use different observables (phase) you can have sub meter accuracy. However as I mentioned above it depends from different aspects just to give you a clear example: GPS gives different performance for the vertical and horizontal coordinates. For the horizontal case, you have satellites in all the direction whereas in the vertical case you can receive only satellite above your head. Unfortunately, the magnitude and direction of error can only be derived if you know the true position over which the position fix was established. If you are referring to collars or other devices for wildlife, you should check the wildlife journals for an estimate of accuracy. Some recent work has been reported there, although the control (truth) may be elusive at times.
