I would imagine that since vertebrates are now so closely regulated, that researchers have avoided doing research with them simply because of the bureaucratic trouble.

I'm particularly interested in mammals, specifically rodents, which may have another strike against them due to their disease carrier status for things like Hanta virus. I personally have experienced the difficulty of getting biosafety protocols approved because of the risk involved.

Any other information on the temporal decline of mammal collecting would be welcome. Perhaps there are dramatically more museum records from before 1966?
