Marine debris such as fishing nets and other man-made debris affects many species and has been shown to cover large areas. But, as you believe this waste affects the biodiversity of the deep. Is it less important that it affects the depths than the surface?
The photo I attached came from a paper I found on Research Gate. Unfortunately I cannot find it on my computer and don't remember the name, maybe the authors will weigh in. The pane on the upper right shows what looks like a soda can (?). I believe the paper said it was taken at a depth of something like 3100 meters in the Med.
The photo shows that beyond the danger it represents for the surface it also represents it for the benthic flora and fauna that are an essential link in the trophic chain.
The maximum depth record of plastic debris was a plastic bag at 10898 m in the Mariana Trench in the western North Pacific
