One reason to measure the temperature is the wear of the material of the drilling equipment. Normally the higher the temperature is, the higher is the wear.
Temperature is an issue for deep drilling (e.g. oil and gas, geothermal energy), where wear of cutting tools is an issue and where high temperatures combined with superheated ground water vapours may also affect the durability of the casing. Also the monitoring of the geothermal gradient is important as it may adversely affect the presence of hydrocarbons, or in the case of geothermal energy necessitate changes to the target depth.
