Maybe professionalism is linked to the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professionist, so in my opinion we have two different ways to assess professionalism development, the first considering the individual (conduct, culture, skills, tasks)

The second considering nurses' community (e.g. National bodies, politics). Anyway, I think that main responsibility is given by nurses ability in understanding what are the real social health needs, finding the best answer to meet those needs. Maybe the context has a strong influence in moderate professionalism development.

Published by American Society of Quality the books make a satirical evaluation, and the conscientiously developed solutions towards minimizing failures.

What is the main responsibility of nurses in professionalism development?

In my opinion, it is essential that  in professionalism development  care should be taken to develop on, an equal footing, the three souls of nursing: technical, relational and educational, in any context you operate

The nurses should connect well with patients,; give technical and medical support, while implementing the Doc's prescriptions,; and Educate the patients for soliciting their contribution to faster and sustainable recovery 

In my perception however, the first and last seem to overlap?, or do I mean building up confidence in patientsfor regaining health is vital?

The main responsibility of each nurse who practices professional nursing is this: how well they blend the following elements into their professional identity which directs all actions: Research, Education, Practice-based Evidence (including research and non-research evidence), Accountability, Integrity, Caring, Advocacy, Standards of Care, and Generativity toward future nurses. It is imperative that nurses become involved with their professional organizations. This involvement will help the nurse develop and define the other components such as developing research competence and evidence based nursing based on best practice.

My perspective may be slightly different.  Individual nurses surely have responsibility to develop professionalism, but how is that defined.  Are you asking as from the perspective of nursig knowledge-base specficity or general behaviors expected of someone who is a member of a profession?

know well what their skills acquired and certified with training and experience in the field and understand what other skills are needed (or such of those held to be further developed) to give answers more and more appropriate to the needs of patients and their families, in relation to the different contexts of care and caring

Practice assertiveness, accountability and work in ethical boundaries.

Publish Evidence Based practice in nursing

Be assertive with other health care professionals and do your work with accountability and resposonsibility.

Our customers are Human beings so we must be consicious to take care of our customers to satisfy with our services.

Update your knowledge and skills by Continuous Nursing education

Apply your knowledge and skills in your clinical practice

Is nursing a profession or a job?

I have no doubt, nursing is a profession. Is necessary learning, training and mainly vocation.

A qualified nurse can do the job of a baby sitter?

Within the job, pursued after prerequisite qualification, unless one  feels, believes or does the requisites, while often acclaimed publicly:it becomes a profession, which Nursing qualifies to.
